The holiday months offer up entertainment for all tastes, so both kids and adults will have a time they will never forget. Although Charleston already boasts a vibrant culture, and is home to countless museums, theatres, historical sites, and sports teams, around the end of the year is when the city puts its best foot forward.

    Theater

    Charleston is famous for its theatres. The South Carolina port city is home to the oldest theatre in the United States, The Dock Street Theatre, and has a vibrant contemporary theatre scene. In December, there are several special performances happening that should not be missed!

    The Lion King will be coming to the North Charleston Performing Arts Centre from December 4th to the 15th. Check out Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa and all the friends of the animal kingdom in the critically acclaimed live performance of the classic Disney film. Be dazzled by the spectacular set design and costumery and get lost in the world and songs of Pride Rock. Lion King is an event that people of all ages can enjoy and is the perfect holiday activity.     It’s the Sherlock Holmes that everyone knows…but with a twist! Follow the detective and his southern friend, Mycroft, on an adventure of mystery, suspense, hi-jinx, and humor in “Sherlock’s Other Brother by a Southern Mother”. The show is playing at The Black Fedora Comedy Mystery Theatre starting on December the 27th. Tickets are $24, and a perfect gift for anyone who enjoys live comedy and mystery.

    Looking for something more festive during the winter months? Charleston’s annual Holiday Spectacular is in its sixth year! Check out this fantastic musical event with the whole family. They’ll be amazed by the spectacular production and stellar talent on display. The show runs from December 5th to December 22nd at the Cultural Arts Centre.     Buddy the Elf makes his theatrical debut!     Museums

    Being the oldest city in the state of South Carolina, Charleston boasts countless historic attractions and sites. The Port City’s museums are the prime spot to experience the area’s rich history, in addition to the historic wedding venues of Charleston. Around the year’s end, its museums host holiday events that are enjoyable for people of all ages.

    On December 7th, check out the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry’s Holiday Extravaganza! People around the world celebrate year-end holidays in all kinds of different ways; the Holiday Extravaganza encourages children to learn about the special rituals and practices performed by people around the world in a fun and hands-on way. Children need to understand that even though some people choose to celebrate differently than they might, the want for joy and happiness is universal. This is an event that should not be missed!

    Also on December 7th, the Gibbes Museum of Art is hosting an exhibit from a special artist; his mediums are gifts and happiness, and he is revered in many parts of the world. No, not Robert Indiana, Santa Claus! Come down to the museum to see a special display featuring a Christmas tree and lights and get a picture taken with Santa. The event is free for members and is included in admission for non-members.

    “Tinsel and Tales” is the perfect Christmas family event. Kate Salley Palmer will be reading her classic Christmas book, “I Know Santa Very Well!” while children can make their own Christmas ornaments and visit with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. Come down to the S.C. Historical Society Museum for this unique event. Tickets are $5 per child for members and $7 per child for non-members.

    Festivals

    There are plenty of year-end festivals to enjoy in Charleston this year, so bring out the loved ones for some holiday fun.

    Experience the magic of the Children’s Holiday Village at the Magnolia Plantation. The event will feature Christmas themed decorations, activities, and treats, and will be held December 7-8,14-15, and 21-22. Children can take part in games and tours, and learn about how people celebrate the holidays around the world. Santa and Mrs. Claus might even make an appearance!

    Looking for a holiday event but are tired of all the Christmas cheer? Be sure to check out Crafty B*stards: Arts and Crafts Festival, which features independent art from local artists. The festival offers buyers the chance to meet the makers behind the crafts that are for sale, and to even make some of their own crafts. The event will be held at the Charleston City Paper on December 7th.

    Get ready for the City of North Charleston Christmas Festival and Parade. When not staying at mansion wedding venues in Charleston, be sure to check out the annual Christmas Parade happening on December 7th, from 4 pm to 8 pm. Admission and parking are free, so be sure to bring the whole family. Enjoy the floats and performers, and keep an eye out for Santa!
