Vacations, even short ones, can be beneficial for your physical and mental health. They help you reconnect with loved ones and disconnect with your hectic work life. Even the planning and scheduling process can raise your mood, according to experts. Francine Lederer, a Los Angeles clinical psychologist, says that people have a better perspective and can focus more on their goals when they benefit from a vacation; even a short one. And there’s more and more evidence that vacations help us live healthier lives, and longer ones, too!

Find your favorite activity: they’re all near The Governor’s House Inn

Dining; shopping; fishing; entertainment; cultural pursuits: one need look no further than Charleston, South Carolina for all of these. It’s time to travel, shop, golf, fish, explore the sights, and eat out in the restaurant capital of the South. As one of the oldest Southern cities, Charleston is steeped in rich history. Established in 1670 by English colonists, Charleston was named the state capitol of South Carolina in 1776. It lost that distinction in 1790. Because it invested in infrastructure to create a deep water port, Charleston has prospered from a rich history and was previously home to a huge naval base, founded in 1901. The United States Constitution was ratified there in 1788.

    • Nothing brings smiles like a wedding!
Noting Charleston’s history, it’s no wonder so many couples like to make this city the backdrop for a romantic wedding. Even though some sentimental fathers may tear up as they give their daughters away, there are usually lots of big smiles throughout a wedding day celebration. Many couples are choosing a historic mansion wedding venue for their nuptials, especially for intimate gatherings. The Governor’s House Inn is a favorite with wedding planners and photographers alike. Every area inside and out is perfectly designed to provide the most beautiful and sophisticated backgrounds for the bridal party. The staff at our historic inn is experienced in hosting some of the most beautiful weddings the city has seen, and works seamlessly with its curated and trusted vendors–proven to make brides (and their fathers) happy. Your guests can enjoy the convenience of staying at the inn and enjoying the wedding and reception all in one elegant location. The complimentary free parking is something to celebrate also!
    • First museum in America
No getaway is complete without a visit to the first museum in America, opened in 1773. Children are entranced even before they enter–the front yard boasts a replica of a Confederate submarine, the C.S.S. Hunley, that was only recently found at a depth of only thirty feet. The museum combines historical, sociological, natural, and artistic preservation across its vast space. Learning about the past gives us all better insight into the challenges they faced, and helps us put our lives and current events into perspective. Kids especially are amazed when they see how young people lived without cell phones and video games!
    • Military significance
Love military history? Or just like big boats? Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum is situated on Charleston Harbor, and is the showcase for The Fighting Lady (also known as the USS Yorktown.) As one of the most renowned aircraft carriers from World War II, it is a monument to history that should not be forgotten. It is so massive—ninety-three feet wide and nearly nine hundred feet long—that every guest is in awe when they see it in real life. Having served in battle in Korea, World War II, Vietnam, and even went to sea to pickup and recover the Apollo 8 astronauts after their re-entry, it truly is a national treasure. In addition to this behemoth, other ships moored alongside her include the USS Laffey, a World War II destroyer, United States Coast Guard cutter Ingham, and the USS Clamagore, an attack submarine.
    • Enhance your celebration
Want to be queen for a day? The Governor’s House Inn has several ways to make your celebration even better. Have you ever walked into an exquisitely appointed room in a historic mansion and been greeted by two dozen artfully arranged red roses in a crystal vase and a platter full of dark chocolate sea salt caramels? Other choices include premium seasonal floral arrangements, champagne or sparkling wine chilled in a silver bucket, chocolate covered strawberries, and even an in-room massage. Talk about putting a smile on your partner’s face! He or she will be the envy of all their friends back home with such high-class treatment.
    • Simplify your planning and enjoy your trip safely
For travelers interested in a package, choices abound. Choosing between curated groups of amenities that include dinner at the top-rated Charleston Inn, horse-drawn carriage rides, a guided tour through the Edmonston-Alston House, a tour of downtown Charleston landmarks, a walking tour of local attractions, or a tour of the Middleton Place Rice Plantation will be the hardest part.
