Registration is Open for the Charleston Marathon!

Charleston Marathon Don’t walk…RUN…your way to the Lowcountry in January. Registration is now open for the Charleston Marathon! You’ll come to realize why it was voted the No. 1 city in the world. From January 17 through January 19, 2014, you can participate in a half marathon, Shrimp & Grits 5K, Bike Ride and Youth Marathon Program. There will be plenty to do, even if you’re not up for a full marathon. As you take in all the charm and hospitality that have made Charleston famous, your participation will benefit a great cause. It will help raise funds to support fine arts programs in community schools. There are several additional reasons you should participate, however. The Marathon and Half Marathon courses feature scenic water views, the Battery and historic King Street. Don’t miss out on the fun in Park Circle too, as the Shrimp & Grits 5K takes you through North Charleston. It all comes together during the Finish Line street festival, which features live entertainment, food, drinks and a kids fun area. But these are only a couple highlights. Awards are five-deep in age categories, and there will be a Health and Fitness Expo that features 40 vendors! And there’s even more for the children…The Youth Marathon Program includes local sports characters and awards. There’s truly something for everyone. Every single participant will receive a long-sleeved Tech shirt that features a Charleston artist. There will be free shrimp and grits and beer for those over age 21 at the finish line, and a commemorative medal for all finishers. So what are the details of the course? The Charleston Marathon is a Boston Qualifier. They are USTAF certified, flat courses with entertainment. There will be aid stations with medical support, indoor bathrooms at the start and finish and indoor showers for you to clean up after finishing the race. Finally, enjoy ample parking at the start, along with shuttle return. If you’re ready to reserve your spot, you can register online, through mail-in, or register late at the Health and Fitness Expo on January 17 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The final chance to sign up is before the races start at 6:30 a.m. It’s sad if you can’t participate, but there are plenty of ways to help out. If you’ll be in town, you should volunteer! The Charleston Marathon is a volunteer-driven nonprofit community event that benefits the Youth Endowment for the Arts. There are quite a few volunteer benefits as well. For example, a T-shirt, post-race shrimp and grits, free parking, meals (minimum of a 4-hour shift), beer (21 and older), the joy of giving back to your community and more! But if you will be gone during this fun-filled weekend, consider donating to the Youth Endowment for the Arts! It’s easy – mail a donation or make your donation online! It is tax deductible! Now that you have decided the best way for you to participate, you’ll need a place to rest your head after all the activities. Consider staying with us at the Governor’s House Inn, a historic Charleston Bed & Breakfast. Our Inn offers the rare pleasures, aristocratic comforts and romantic grandeur of a pre-revolutionary National Landmark combined with legendary southern hospitality. Book your stay here.
