Are You Ready for the Lowcountry Oyster Festival?

Lowcountry Oyster Festival We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but we know you need to plan in advance, especially for an event like this! It has been named “one of the top 20 events in the southeast” by the Southeastern Tourism Society. We are talking about the Lowcountry Oyster Festival. Are you ready to do some shucking? Eighty-thousand pounds of oysters…that’s what you will find January 26, 2014 at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant. The Lowcountry Oyster Festival is the largest in the WORLD. Let’s talk details. In 2014, the highly-anticipated event will include not only oyster shucking and oyster eating contests, but also live music on the main stage, wine, and a selection of domestic and imported beers. But it’s not just for grown ups. There will be a Children’s Area as well, along with a food court that showcases great restaurants. Every taste will be satisfied! And it gets even better. All the fun benefits a great cause. The Lowcountry Oyster Festival is a charity fundraiser benefiting the Ronald McDonald House, Hospitality Heroes, Hollings Cancer Center, Shriners Hospitals for Children and the Charleston County Schools Science Materials Resource Center. In case you’d like to know more about how the funds are used, here’s some additional information on the charities.

    • The Ronald McDonald House of Charleston provides a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children. It eliminates the financial burden of costly hotel rooms while it provides an atmosphere in which families can feel as close to normal as possible.
    • The Omar Shrine Temple is a local nonprofit that covers the 22 eastern-most counties of South Carolina. Their work benefits the Shriners Hospitals for Children, which have a network of 22 hospitals offering state of the art care to children.
    • Hospitality Heroes is a nonprofit that lends a helping hand to local hospital employees and their families when they are hit with a medical hardship.
    • The Lowcountry Oyster Festival also benefits the Hollings Cancer Center, which unites the best cancer research, education, and treatment in a single location. It offers cancer support services, too.
    • The final organization that is helped by the festival is the Charleston County Schools Science Materials Resource Center. It enables science teachers in the tri-county area schools to have the tools and textbooks that are needed to best educate students.

Again, the Lowcountry Oyster Festival will kick off on Sunday, January 26 at Boone Hall Plantation. It runs from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Start planning your trip now to the Lowcountry.
