The History and Architecture of The Governor’s House Inn

The mansion was built in 1760, just over ten years before the Revolutionary War. It was constructed on the premises of the Charleston Orange Garden and concert venue, which was located outside the original walled city of old Charles Towne.

The Governor’s House Inn is also the only home in the United States where you can sleep in the same house as Edward Rutledge, who at 26 years of age, was the youngest man to sign the Declaration of Independence. It has been declared a National Historic Landmark because of this association with Rutledge who lived out his days in the mansion from 1776 to 1800. The Governor’s House Inn was originally designed as a Georgian house, featuring a central stairway with two rooms with high ceilings on each side. The staircase was later renovated to adapt it to the Victorian style, which was then in fashion.

While the mansion has been updated for modern convenience, all of the windows, wood floors, and slate fireplaces in the living and dining rooms are original to the building. The atmosphere is still very stately, providing you and your wedding guests with a unique experience. In fact, you might feel like you’ve stepped back in time to 18th century America.

For your rehearsal dinner or for a night out on the town, enjoy the local culinary scene, from Southern fine dining to wine bars, breweries, and live music venues. For the history buff, there are plenty of certified tours, historical sites, museums, and galleries nearby, and even a couple of ghost tours. Take the little ones to the aquarium or on a pirate tour. Book a carriage ride, take a harbor cruise, or simply walk along the waterfront.

Of course, the whole bridal party will be eager to visit one of Charleston’s spas for a manicure/pedicure, and professional hair and make-up, among other treatments and services. Some of the wedding party might also enjoy playing a round of golf.

And who doesn’t love the beach? The Charleston area boasts five gorgeous beaches for all your sunshine, swimming, and wedding photography needs. This is also a perfect way to entertain the little ones. The summer weather is temperate and comfortable with some hot days for soaking and sunbathing.

Why not have a horse-drawn carriage take you for a romantic, scenic ride through town or along the waterfront? You can take in the sunset over the water on one side, and the stately architecture of houses built in the 1800s, on the other, or simply cuddle up in the carriage and enjoy the time with your loved one. There are also group carriage tours. Another wonderful way to enjoy the waterfront would be to take a harbor cruise.

    Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties

There are many exciting venues and ideas for your bachelor and bachelorette party, including drinks at a wine bar or brewery, a visit to a live music venue, dancing at a nightclub, or attending a cabaret. Or, if you want to do something completely out of the ordinary, you could choose to have your bachelor/ bachelorette at a haunted pub tour.

    Put Yourself There

Imagine waking up on your wedding day in a luxurious suite in the mansion, and then attending a romantic brunch with your betrothed and guests at one of the restaurants that have partnered with the Inn. Then get married in our lush courtyard, with friends and family gathered around you, and the Southern breeze kissing your cheeks. Alternatively, the bride may choose to descend the magnificent Victorian cascading staircase, down to the main floor, toward her groom, and get married indoors. Either way, the wedding promises to be a Southern spectacle.

Celebrate your nuptials over delectable wine, cheese, and other gourmet pairings with your guests in the common room, dining room, on the deck, or in the courtyard before going out to dinner at one of the local bars, breweries, or restaurants. Choose from Southern fine dining, or perhaps a seafood restaurant. After the wedding day events are completed, relax with a glass of sherry in the courtyard or on the porch.
