    Cooper River Bridge Run April 6, 2013, Mount Pleasant – Charleston The 2013 Cooper River Bridge Run is just around the corner. And you don’t have to be an avid runner to participate – walkers are welcome and you can walk or run for yourself or for charity. Started in 1978, the Cooper River Bridge Run provides a world-class 10-K foot race. The race promotes continuous physical activity and a healthy lifestyle through education and opportunity. Last year 36,652 runners and walkers crossed the finish line on Meeting Street. The Cooper River Bridge Run is well organized and includes world-class competition in a beautiful setting with unparalleled participant satisfaction. The run promotes community cooperation and participation in healthy events throughout the year. On March 27, 2012 a new initiative was launched by Mayor Joseph Riley called Lighten Up Charleston to help the Charleston community become more active and lose 100,000 pounds. Walking the Bridge Run is a great way to cement your commitment to living a healthy lifestyle. Family Circle Cup Tennis Tournament March 30 – April 7, 2013, Daniel Island The Williams sisters will be back at the Family Circle Cup this year. Serena Williams will join sister Venus at this year’s clay-court tournament in April at the wonderful Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island . Serena Williams won the championship in her last two appearances at Daniel Island in 2008 and 2012. Also on the roster is #8 ranked Sara Errani (Italy) and #9 ranked Samantha Stosur (Australia) among others. The Family Circle Cup, a WTA Premier Event, has a roster of past champions that include some of the biggest names in the history of women’s tennis including Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Steffi Graf, Gabriela Sabatini, Martina Hingis, Jennifer Capriati, Venus Williams, Justine Henin, Serena Williams, and Caroline Wozniacki. Flowertown Festival April 5 – 7, 2013, Summerville Every year the town of Summerville heralds the arrival of spring with its now-famous Flowertown Festival. This year’s event is the 41st and will be held amidst flowering azaleas, wisteria and dogwoods. Consistently ranked one of the Top 20 events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society, the three-day festival features: Over 200 jury-selected artists from throughout the country who display their work for sale; Delicious foods from restaurants at The Taste of Summerville; Fun activities and rides for children at the Children’s Jubilee; live music; free admission; and free parking. It’s a great way to welcome spring, warm weather, and to just have a great time! Charleston Spring Festival of Houses and Gardens March 21 – April 20, 2013, Charleston At the height of Charleston’s blooming season, the 66th Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens, March 21 – April 20 is a great opportunity to get a rare look inside Charleston’s gracious homes and hidden gardens. Located in the Old and Historic districts, some of these private residences date to the 18th century and are filled with fascinating history, antiques and art.
