The holidays are an especially great time to visit Charleston, South Carolina. The entire city is decorated in class, and you will have a unique opportunity to see the city in a way unlike any other time of the year. If you are planning a vacation in the near future, here is one great option to see some holiday décor and take in some Charleston history:
The Joseph Manigault House is decked out each year for the holiday season and it is truly a great site to see for the entire family. Every year, The Garden Club of Charleston takes this amazing house and transforms it with live plant materials and other décor. The 2011 holiday theme is “Charleston’s Antebellum Charms”.
Gentleman architect Gabriel Manigault, Joseph’s brother, originally designed the Joseph Manigault House. The house is three stories tall, and built in an Adam or Federal architectural style. As French Huguenots, the Manigualts moved to Charleston to escape persecution in Europe. Here is some more information on the Joseph Manigualt House from The Charleston Museum:
One of Charleston’s most graceful historic structures, the Joseph Manigault House reflects the lifestyle of both a wealthy, rice-planting family and the slaves who also lived there. Many of the rooms have been restored to their original (and often unexpected) color schemes, while a sweeping staircase provides access to the second floor. Furnishings, from the Museum’s collections, include an outstanding collection of American, English and French pieces of the early 19th century. A charming Gate Temple is the focus of a period Garden, and the location of the adjacent outbuildings, such as the kitchen and slave quarters, stable, and privy are marked with interpretive signage.
Holiday decorations at the JosepManigault House every year, the Garden Club of Charleston decorate the Joseph Manigault House for the holidays. Visit us December 4-31, 2010 and see their creative arrangements, using only live plant materials that would have been available in the Low country during the 19th century.
