    The Best Time to Visit Charleston, SC

    What is the best time to visit Charleston, SC? It is always difficult to know when would be the best time to visit a city like Charleston, SC.  With so much to offer, it can be hard to understand when to take advantage of this historic city.   Charleston is filled with arts festivals, marathons, and culinary events that can be difficult to sort through.  Here is a brief guide to help you know what takes place within each season: 


    Spring is always a good time to go on vacation, and it is an especially good season to visit Charleston, SC.  You will be able to tour the city without having to fight the humidity and heat, which are typical for the middle of summer.  Also, spring is a great opportunity to tour the many plantations and gardens surrounding the area.  Opportunities abound throughout this season, and here is a brief guide of what will be going on in and around the city:

    Spoleto Festival – is probably one of the largest and most famous events in Charleston, SC.  It is arranged by Spoleto Festival USA, which claims it as the one of the best all encompassing arts festivals in the nation.  The festival occurs late in the spring season and towards the start of summer.  It typically starts in May, on Memorial Day, and lasts for 17 days. It incorporates over 120 performances of dance, opera, music, theater, and visual art.  It is a great opportunity to enjoy the city and the vibrant culture surrounding it.  As an added bonus, attendees will have an opportunity to simultaneously attend Piccolo Spoleto events, which showcase regional artists and dozens of events.

    Cooper River Bridge Run – This 10K race is held annually in late March.  It is a great opportunity to see the city and sites on foot for those that have an active, competitive spirit.   Typically over 30,000 contestants participate annually, making it one of the cities largest events.

    Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens This festival is organized by the Historic Charleston Foundation, and provides the rare opportunity for guests to go inside private houses and gardens that represent some of the oldest and most beautiful historic home sites in the nation.  This festival begins mid March and runs through mid April.

    Summer If you don’t mind the heat, and enjoy the sun, summer is a great opportunity to visit Charleston, SC.  It is one of the best opportunities to visit many of the regional parks, and tour the surrounding islands and beaches.  The 4th of July is always a good time to visit one of the oldest cities in the US. Fall Because of the mild weather and cooler nights, fall is arguably one of the best times to visit Charleston, SC.  Some of the events occurring in this season are listed below:

    Southern Living Taste of Charleston – an event occurring in late September or early October that gives guests an opportunity to tour Boone Hall Plantation and taste food from many of the finest restaurants in town.

    MOJA Arts Festival – Another great opportunity to experience all types of art in one of the oldest US cities.  This festival typically starts September 29 and lasts until October 9.

    Fall Tour of Homes & Gardens – This event is sponsored by the Preservation Society, and lasts from the end of September to the end of October.


    The Holiday period between Thanksgiving and New Years Eve is a fabulous time to visit Charleston. The city is decked out for the holidays, the weather is perfect, and many wonderful events are going on to make the season splendid.   Also, occurring later in the winter season, The Southeastern Wildlife Expo takes place in February.  It gives visitors the unique chance to view some of the best art, sculpture, and photography in the wildlife genre.
