    Best Charleston, SC Attractions to See

    A visit to Charleston is a memorable experience.  It is difficult to describe Charleston without using such words as beautiful, romantic, historic, and just plain fun!  If you are contemplating a visit to historic Charleston, allow our friendly staff here at the Governor’s House Inn assist you in planning your stay.  Since there are so many wonderful attractions to visit in Charleston, a listing of a few favorites might be helpful.

    Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

    Patriots Point is home to the USS Yorktown. The USS Yorktown played a significant role in the Pacific offensive during WW II in which it earned eleven battle stars.  The Congressional Medal of Honor Museum is on board of the Yorktown.  Here you will learn about the origin of the Medal of Honor and the brave Americans who have received this distinction.  After touring the Yorktown, visit the USS Laffey, the only surviving Sumner-class destroyer left in North America.  Once off the ships, you will be able to walk through a true to scale US Naval Advanced Tactical Support Base camp and see crafts used to patrol jungles and rivers throughout the Vietnam War. End your tour at the Cold War Memorial, serving as a tribute to those who have served on naval submarines during the Cold War (1947-1989). Patriots Point is located in Mount Pleasant, SC.  Admission:  $18 adults, $15 seniors, $11 child

    Middleton Gardens

    Middleton Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and is home to America’s oldest landscaped gardens.  Middleton Plantation was the home of Arthur Middleton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. The gardens were designed with order and balance in mind and, no matter what the season, there is always something in bloom.  In the stable yards it is typical to see a weaver, cooper, carpenter, potter, or blacksmith at work demonstrating the artisan skills of the slaves who once served the plantation.  Middleton Gardens are located off HWY 61.      Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter National Monument is operated by the National Park Service.  The first shots of the Civil War were fired on Fort Sumter as the Confederates opened fire on the Federal Fort in the Charleston Harbor. The fort is accessible by a 30 min. boat tour through the Charleston Harbor. The tour leaves from two points- Liberty Square in downtown Charleston or Patriots Point. Admission: $18 adults, $16 seniors, $11 child

     SC Aquarium

    The SC Aquarium is located at 100 Aquarium Wharf in downtown Charleston. Tour over sixty exhibits displaying the five regions of the Appalachian watershed. Children will enjoy the touch tank exhibiting horseshoe crabs and stingrays. The great ocean tank extends from the first to third floor of the aquarium displaying over 450 animals.  Admission: $24.95 adults, $14.95 children   Enjoy these attractions along with your stay at the Governor’s House Inn.
