The Isle of Palms county Park is conveniently located and has lifeguards along a designated swimming area. It is just 12 miles from downtown Charleston, and a great option for those looking for a spot suitable for the entire family. Folly Beach Often referred to as “The Edge of America,” Folly Beach is also conveniently located in relation to downtown, approximately 15 – 25 minutes depending on traffic. You’ll have a chance to see Morris Island Lighthouse if you make the trip. Also, Folly Beach County Park, which is located on the eastern part of the island, has outdoor showers and restrooms available. This is another great option for those wanting to be near the ocean with the family. Sullivan’s Island If you are looking for a laid back, informal setting, then Sullivan’s is the spot. The community is very intimate, but family friendly as well. There are some great, casual restaurants on the island like Poe’s Tavern. Also, if you head out to Sullivan’s, make sure you check out some of the historical sites, like the lighthouse and the Fort Sumter National Monument. Kiawah Island With only 21 miles between Kiawah and the city of Charleston, it’s a great trip to make if you have time. Most of the areas are private, but public access to the beach is available at Beachwalker County Park, which is located on the west end of the island. The island is known for its wildlife and natural beauty. You’ll find endless acres of marsh and thick forests of pine trees. Seabrook Island Similar in distance to Kiawah, Seabrook Island is only 22 miles south from historic Charleston. It is also home to private communities, with limited access to owners and guests.
