Discovering the Best Hid-Inns of Charleston

Cobblestone alleyways, live oak-lined streets and veiled breezeway entrances welcome guests to some of Charleston's most quaint, yet luxurious, secrets -- the inns hidden amongst the grand homes of the Battery, waterfront suburbs of Mt. Pleasant and sleepy sands of Folly Beach.  In the fast-Two guests relax on the porch at the Governor's Inn.paced quest of the typical vacationer, attempting to hit each carriage ride and ghost tour, sample enough She crab soup and shrimp and grits to be a connoisseur and collect a menagerie of souvenirs to rival Wall Drug, the unique niceties and exceptional service of Charleston's smaller boutique hotels are often overlooked.

This peril, of missing the true charms of Charleston, Charlestonians and the Old South, can be quickly alleviated with a stop in The Governor's House Inn, at 117 Broad Street.  The pale yellow, Federal style home was the circa 1760 residence of past governor and youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence, Edward Rutledge.  Upon entering, one is greeted with graciousness and hospitality, signature not only to the region, but a testament to the close-knit staff of the Inn.

Second only to the warm welcomes, are the culinary delights of the Inn.  The "near gourmet" breakfast, which can be delivered to your room on a silver tray or enjoyed on one of the many beautiful verandas, the afternoon tea of all homemade delicacies and the evening wine and cheese reception allow guests to relax and indulge in the grandeur that surrounds them.  The ladies of the Inn use this time to get to know each guest and arrange everything from maps or shopping recommendations to a beach chair and towel for the day out of the city.

The first class service and amenities are so impressive, that after a one-night stay, the current owner, decided to purchase the House.  Falling in love with the Governor's House Inn could turn a brief visit into quite the investment.  After slumbering in the Middleton or Rutledge suites, indulging in the lime pound cake in the sunroom or enjoying the gracious hospitality of the staff, it will certainly seem worth it.  ---- By Meredith H.
