5 Reasons to Make Charleston Your Romantic Destination

Wednesday, February 11, 2015

Charleston is for lovers! Lovers of food, art and culture that is... But Charleston is also an ideal atmosphere for romance. The following are just a few reasons why you should visit with your special someone soon.

1. Good Food

We rave about local restaurants all the time, but the fact that Charleston has good food certainly bears repeating. Charleston is renowned for seafood and traditional “Lowcountry” cuisine, but the area offers a variety of internationally inspired concepts as well. You can peruse some of our favorite restaurants at

2. Free Entertainment

When visitors come to Charleston they expect to spend some money. And while it is nice to splurge on downtown lodging or a five-star meal, not everything on your itinerary should cost a fortune. We recommend that guests stroll along the battery, visit Waterfront Park or take a short drive to one of four local beaches. Click for even more wallet-friendly ideas.

3. Live Music

Charleston is home to some talented musicians, and it is a popular stop for national artists as well. Bars and music halls feature live shows every weekend, and there are plenty of week night shows as well. For details about upcoming shows, contact one of our favorite venues or visit

4. Rich History and Culture

When you do visit Charleston, we hope that you will stay with us! The Governor’s House Inn is conveniently located to local attractions, but more importantly, it’s a unique way to experience a piece of Charleston (and American) history. You can learn even more about Charleston culture by taking a tour. Click to peruse the most popular tour providers.

5. Relaxed Atmosphere

Charleston is a great place to slow down and take a breath. When staying downtown, everything you need is a short walk (or pedi cab ride) away. Charleston boasts an abundance of outdoor dining options (roof top bars, sidewalk cafes and restaurant patios), which are perfect for people watching, and Conde Nast named the city “friendliest” in America last fall.

Plan a Romantic Getaway

The Governor’s House Inn offers a special Romantic Getaway package that includes carriage tour tickets and a gift certificate to the critically acclaimed Charleston Grill. It’s a great way to sample some of the reasons why we love Charleston, and we hope to see you soon!

Planning a Wedding Weekend in Charleston

Tuesday, January 13, 2015
Your wedding is a momentous occasion! Make a weekend of it!

Wedding weekend activities are a great way for local friends and family to meet and greet your out-of-town guests. Best of all, it feels like vacation for everyone! Here are a few ideas that may help to make your wedding weekend extra special...

- Mix and Mingle - Plan a “welcome party” so that your guests have a chance to mingle before the main event. It could be an intimate dinner, a bar crawl or a harbor cruise. Take guest accommodations  into consideration when choosing a party venue.

- Stay Together -  Make arrangements for your bridal party to stay together. The Governor’s House Inn is particularly well-suited for wedding day brunches, hair/makeup sessions and bridal portraits.
- Eat Brunch - Plan a post-wedding brunch. Charleston has so many places to choose from, and there is no better way to send-off (and thank) out-of-town guests.

The dog days of summer are officially over, and fall is in the air. The homes and gardens featured in this series are privately owned, and it is a rare treat to get an inside look! Different properties, which highlight a variety of periods in early American history, are featured each day. Guests are welcomed at each tour site by a warm and knowledgeable host. A candlelight tour, Homes of the American Revolution, will be held Friday, October 10th. Visit TheFallTours.orgfor a complete list of tours or to purchase tickets. Charleston Ranked No. 1

Friday, July 11, 2014
For three years running, Charleston has been named the No. 1 destination in the U.S. and Canada by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler. This year, Charleston was also named No. 2 in the world! If you’ve never visited the Holy City, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. The CNT rankings are part of the Readers Choice Awards. Rankings are determined based upon reader ratings in the following categories:
  • Culture
  • Friendliness
  • Atmosphere
  • Restaurants
  • Lodging
  • Shopping
Charleston receives high scores across the board, and we have some sneaking suspicions as to why.

Like most seaports, Charleston is somewhat of a melting pot; blending Southern, English, French and West African cultural elements. Well known for art, music, cuisine, theater and fashion, downtown plays host to a variety of cultural events and fairs including:
  • Spoleto Festival
  • Festival of Houses and Gardens
  • Southeastern Wildlife Expo
  • Charleston Food and Wine Festival
  • Fashion Week
  • Cooper River Bridge Run
  • Lowcountry Jazz Festival
There is also an abundance of museums, galleries and historical sites to keep travelers busy.

Charleston might as well be the definition of southern hospitality and has been recognized as the “friendliest” city in the nation.

The Holy City is downright picturesque with cobblestone streets, harbor views, historic buildings and a skyline dotted by church steeples. The downtown peninsula is also surrounded by beautiful beaches (including Folly, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Kiawah and Seabrook) and plantations. The setting lends itself to a laid back atmosphere for both tourists and locals.

Downtown Charleston and the surrounding areas boast a variety of up-scale and casual dining options. Flavors vary from local seafood to international cuisine. Some of our favorite lunch and dinner spots include:
  • The Charleston Grill – King St.
  • Cypress – East Bay St.
  • Halls Chophouse – King St.
  • O-Ku – King St.
  • Magnolias – East Bay St.
  • Husk – Queen St.
  • Poogan’s Porch – Queen St.
  • High Cotton – East Bay St.
  • Bull Street Gourmet & Market – King St.
  • Hominy Grill – Rutledge Ave.
  • Five Loaves – Cannon St.

Charleston offers a variety of lodging options, from major chains to historic bed and breakfasts like the Governor’s House Inn. Most downtown accommodations are within the historic district and close to shopping, dining and nightlife.

Downtown offers tons of shopping, the majority of which is split between King Street and Market Street. Options vary and include designer labels, local boutiques and national brands like:
  • Anthropologie
  • Banana Republic
  • J. Crew
  • Gap
  • Luna
  • Aldo
  • Urban Outfitters
  • Forever 21
  • Copper Penny
  • Steve Madden
  • Juicey Cotoure
  • Lacoste
  • BCBG MaxAzria
…And that’s just to name a few. The Market area also features a variety of candy and souvenir shops, and goods from local artists and artisans are also available. To learn more about the Readers Choice Awards visit

Celebrating July 4th in Charleston

Thursday, June 12, 2014
Summer is in full swing, and there is nothing quintessentially more summer than vacation or the 4th of July. This year combine both for the ultimate summertime experience! Many history buffs flock to Boston or DC for America’s birthday, but there are certainly other ways to get your historical fix on Independence Day. A July 4th vacation to Charleston, SC may be particularly appealing to those who prefer to avoid peak tourist season. If you enjoy the “road less traveled” consider visiting historical downtown Charleston this July, and retrace the footsteps of a founding father. Edward Rutledge, a Charleston native and South Carolina congressional representative, was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. Mr. Rutledge served in both the First and second Continental Congress, and in 1776, at the age of 27, he signed the Declaration. He was considered by the British to be such a threat that he was captured and imprisoned after the fall of Charleston in 1780. Mr. Rutledge continued to be a highly influential figure in American politics after his release and was elected Governor in 1798. From 1776 until his death in 1800, Edward Rutledge resided at what is now known as the “Governor’s House.” Today the home is considered to be a national landmark, and it serves a Bed and Breakfast. A portrait of Rutledge hangs in the foyer of the home along with a copy of the Declaration of Independence. And if history isn’t enough to draw you into the Holy City this summer, check out a few of the local festivities that are sure to please!
