The Charleston Aquarium, Not Just for Kids

Charleston AquariumAlthough not officially called the Charleston Aquarium, the city has great pride and a strong sense of ownership of the magnificent South Carolina Aquarium. Officially opening in May of 2000, the South Carolina Aquarium is located right on the Charleston Harbor at 100 Aquarium Wharf. With the wonderful location overlooking the harbor, you have a chance to see Charleston from a unique angle while exploring the numerous animals and exhibits that the aquarium hosts. Although the aquarium has plenty to do for the children, it’s not all about the kids. Here are some great ways that adults can have a fulfilling day at the Charleston Aquarium.

As already mentioned, the aquarium houses an extremely wide array of wildlife. You can learn more about all kinds of living things, including fish, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds, and plants. These animals comprise much of what you will see in the various regions of South Carolina, and you will also get to experience a hint of Madagascar. After your visit, you can expect to be able to tell the difference between a Nile crocodile and an American alligator, as well as a mantella frog and a tomato frog.

One of the cool interactive areas of the aquarium is the touch tank. Here you can get up close and personal with creatures such as hermit crabs, whelk, sea urchins, horseshoe crabs, and Atlantic stingrays. You can touch all these animals as a member of the aquarium staff will be available to guide you and answer all of your questions.

An additional feature to the museum is the 4-D Theater that brings the screen to life. Not only will the sea creatures be popping off the screen, but you will also be able to feel the effects of wind and water. An extra purchase is required for entrance into the 4-D Theater.

The South Carolina Aquarium has a great Sea Turtle Rescue Program. The aquarium helps bring sea turtles back to health and then properly acclimates them to their natural ocean environment.

When the typical 9-5 hours are over, the fun doesn’t stop at the South Carolina Aquarium. The facility is designed to host premier events such as weddings, banquets, and a variety of other social gatherings. The aquarium recently received the Wedding Wire Rater Award, which is given to vendors who meet a 4.5 out of 5 rating. With wildlife all around and the harbor as the backdrop, the South Carolina Aquarium is the ideal place to spend a day or host your next important event.
